Festo automation technology behind spectacular movement of 12 metre long hand at La Scala opera performance in Milan

Stage designer and robot artist Roland Olbeter has created an avant-garde stage set for Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser on behalf of La Scala in Milan. A more than 12 metre long hand is used as a backdrop right in the very middle of the action, the hand functioning like its real life counterpart thanks to Festo automation technology.

Roland Olbeter is always looking to link automation technology and art, creating spectacular objects like the Mano Gigante in the process.

Festo’s collaboration with Roland Olbeter stretches back many years. The artist uses only proven Festo industrial components, which he combines in pursuit of his artistic interpretation.

Animation of the Mano Gigante is assured by eight Festo DNCE series electric drives, coordinated by customised control technology.

Quality and reliability of the highest order are the guarantors of his stage operations every bit as much as they are in industrial use.

One beautiful side effect: The musicians also appreciate the quietness of the electric drives on the stage. It doesn’t interfere with people’s listening pleasure.
