Process technology from Festo
and BAMAG GmbH helps provide the population of Cairo with clean drinking water.
In numerous water treatment plants in the Egyptian capital, the
control system for filter beds installed by Festo and BAMAG
GmbH ensures continuity of the water supply even in the event
of a power failure. This intelligent process automation solution
reduces energy costs and increases productivity.
Water production in Cairo’s waterworks comes to a standstill
whenever the filters need to be cleaned. Festo and BAMAG have
automated the filtration and backwashing process. The control
system itself detects when and for how long the filter beds need
to be backwashed with air and water. The times of day at which
cleaning is carried out are matched to the actual needs so that
the production of drinking water can be restarted as quickly as
possible. In the case of a power failure, full control of all filter
beds can be maintained using a manual override on the control
panel and a reservoir of air to provide an uninterrupted water
supply to the city.
Festo selected tried and tested components for this application
on the banks of the Nile. Linear actuators DLP with an
open/close function automatically control the alternation of raw
and flushing water. The flow of air, flushing water and drinking
water is controlled by three butterfly valves which have been
automated by using semi-rotary actuators (DFPB/DAPS) and
analogue sensor boxes (SRAP). A control cabinet houses an
integrated valve terminal (CPX/VTSA), a PLC and an FED
operator panel.
