Fig. 2
comparing international productivity
shows that in 2011, UK GDP per worker
continued to fall relative to other major
G7 countries. Output per hour in the
UK was 16% below the average for
the rest of the major industrialised
economies, the widest productivity gap
since 1993. On an output per worker
basis, UK productivity was 21% lower
than the rest of the G7. This clearly
indicates that both skills provision
and management are important
elements in increasing productivity.
In our research, 75% say that
management skills are an important
issue. Likewise, nearly two thirds
(64%) of organisations say that
leadership skills and strategic
skills (63%) need to be developed.
Only 32% say that their leadership
capabilities are adequate (see fig 1).
Employee engagement
Employee engagement is critical to
organisations that require any project
to be successful. On average, actively
disengaged employees miss more than
9 days of work per year whilst engaged
employees miss less than three. 56%
of engaged employees say that they
will be with their current employers
a year from now compared to 13% of
their disengaged colleagues. Due to
ongoing research by Gallup and other
similar organisations, it is increasingly
being recognised and accepted that
the measurement of engaged to
actively disengaged employees in a
company acts as a valid health check.
Our research shows that managers
believe their employees to be
relatively highly engaged with
50% of organisations rating their
employees on an engagement
level of 8 and above (see fig 2).
These levels of employee engagement
are based on self-assessment. We
also asked about programmes and
measurement of employee engagement.
42% of respondents had no specific
measurement in place and 35% had an
annual survey. Only a small proportion
had either a continual programme
or specific programme related to
employee engagement (see fig 3).
