Standing 508 metres tall, the world’s
tallest office building is truly a sight
to behold. In July 2011, the Taipei Finan-
cial Center, Taipei 101, also became the
world’s tallest green building, achieving
Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) Platinum Certif ication
under “Existing Buildings” for outstand-
ing energy efficiency measures.
Over a 20-month period, the office
building underwent a series of optimi-
sation measures and energy consump-
tion was significantly reduced. With 101
floors above ground and five below
ground level, this “green building” is
now achieving annual energy savings of
10 per cent. Current consumption was
reduced by 4.8 million kilowatt hours,
Energy excellence
water consumption was reduced by
28,000 tonnes and there are now 1,261
fewer tonnes of waste produced than
there were before the efficiency meas-
ures were introduced. Taipei 101’s
energy consumption is now up to 30
per cent lower than that of an average
building, resulting in annual savings
of around 700,000 US dollars.
