Water keeps the world moving
The earth has an abundance of the life-giving element that is
water. The problem is that it is not always available in the right
place or in the form that humans need most – clean drinking
water. The growing world population and rapidly expanding mega
cities are placing heavy demands on water treatment plants.
In the face of growing pressure to act, new solutions for the sus-
tainable use of natural resources are being developed in urban
centres. The automation of water and wastewater treatment
plants is becoming an essential part of sustainable urban devel-
opment.
For example, the water treatment plant in Nanjing, China,
uses state-of-the-art automation technology to supply the
city’s six million inhabitants with clean water. Around 4.5 million
cubic metres of water are treated here every day using inno
vative Festo technology. This includes controlling the influent
and effluent of sedimentation tanks – as can be seen in the cover
picture – with toothed weirs typically found in the clear water
overflow. Experts believe that the water concepts for megacities
can serve as a model for reliable water supply worldwide.
