FAQ on being free of copper

Technical cleanliness is decisive for success when working with electrode materials. Even the smallest amounts of copper can result in an undesirable reaction in the battery and lead to short-circuits.

What does “free of copper” mean at Festo?

Generally speaking, there are no binding and explicit standards for copper-free products as required in battery manufacturing. Festo therefore aligns itself with criteria commonly used in the market. We have had extensive discussions with our customers about the requirements that copper-free products need to fulfil. This has resulted in the following guidelines: for Festo products, free of copper means that ...

  • ... bearings, guides and all other parts that are subject to friction are entirely free of copper and
  • the amount of copper included in the alloys used for all other parts of the product is less than 6.0%.

Cables, motors, PCBs and pilot valves are excluded from the copper-free requirement.
