Silver medals at World Skills UK
Congratulations to John Hedges & Connor Bing for representing Festo at the World Skills UK competition and bringing back their silver medals. The competition took place at The Skills Show from 14-16 November at the NEC, Birmingham. The Skills Show is a showcase for skills and provides the opportunity to bring young people and industry together.
John and Connor took part in the Mechatronics part of the competition where they were set a range of purely pneumatic, electro-pneumatic and PLC programming tasks, all with time constraints and set criteria in order to gain maximum points. They were competing alongside four other teams from various reaches of engineering excellence, such as apprentices from Caterpillar and students from Middlesex University.
Despite the pressure and challenging tasks, they came home with some silver ware. Unfortunately they were pipped at the post by just half a point by last year’s gold medal winning Middlesex University team.
Festo are very proud of John and Connor’s achievement in this first year of Festo GB competing. “We enjoyed the whole experience of the competition, and look forward to possibly competing next year!” says John.
WorldSkills UK champions and drives excellence in workplace skills through competition. They encourage local competitions, support regional competitions, host the flagship national competition ‘The Skills Show’ and prepare outstanding competitors for global competition. Outstanding competitors, aged 18 – 25, who excel in WorldSkills UK Competitions will be invited to compete for a place in the team that represents the UK at WorldSkills, the biennial international skills competition. The next international WorldSkills Competition will be held in Brazil in 2015.
