AGTC clip fix tool - Red Dot product Design award winner 2014

Since 1955, the design competition run by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, has been presenting awards for outstanding product design. Today, this "Red Dot Design Award” is an internationally recognised seal of quality where the international jury evaluate submissions on product ergonomics, functionality and design quality. Festo received a Red Dot Design Award for outstanding product design on its AGTC clip fix tool, which was one of 4,815 entries from over 50 countries.

The toothbrush, the hammer and the pen all have something in common – they are shining examples of ergonomic product design. With these products, the user can immediately see where and how they should be handled. Festo places great value on product design, believing that products that share a common, aesthetically appealing look, supports brand recognition. User-friendliness has always been at the heart of the Festo product and design strategy. The AGTC clip fix tool represents the perfect embodiment of this synergy between development and design.

Ergonomic product design is by no means an easy task. The technical, organisational or social conditions that influence human interaction with the product must be taken into account by product designers in order to prevent any risk, disability or impairment when using the product. The clean lines and distinctive colour scheme of the Festo clip fix tool highlight the grip areas for the user whilst the colour scheme also makes the Festo brand instantly recognisable.

Clip and push-in connectors are increasingly being used in final vehicle assembly, for example to attach the interior lining for car doors. Assembly workers previously had to exert considerable force to press the clips into the holes – an extremely strenuous and not particularly ergonomic activity. At the suggestion of the car manufacturer Volkswagen, Festo has developed a pneumatic tool that makes it easy to press in the clips. "When designing the AGTC clip fix tool, we worked with the developers to devise a concept that is tailored entirely to the needs of the user. The objective was to design a product that meets every conceivable requirement in terms of user-friendliness and the product-human interface," says Jörg Peschel, product designer at Festo AG & Co. KG.

The award ceremony took place on 7th July 2014 at the Aalto Theatre in Essen. After the individual prizes had been awarded, the international guests got the opportunity to see all the winning products in the Red Dot Design Museum.
