The plug sockets with cable KMYZ-9 have a reduction of holding coil management.  This reduces heat formation, among other things. This is important particularly when several valves are assembled to form one valve manifold. In the case of individual valves (not built into a manifold), the plug socket with cable KMYZ-3... without holding current coil management may also be used.

Does the flow specification for valves relate to compressed or uncompressed air?

Festo measures the flow rate of valves at a supply pressure of 6 bar and an output pressure of 5 bar (delta p = 1 bar). The quantity of air that is measured and documented in the catalogue relates to uncompressed air.

Yes, these have the type designations MFH/JMFH/VL/J-5-PK-3. In this case the actual valve with a corresponding sub-base (with barbed connectors for 3 mm tube) forms a unit ready for installation. With the previous types this sub-base was available as accessory.

The valve MFH-3-..-S is approved for use in the vacuum range. Can a vacuum be connected to all ports?

No, operation in the vacuum range is only safe if the vacuum is connected to port 1. Closing off port 3 in vacuum operation is not permissible either.

Why is the Tiger valve MOFH-3-... not available as a auxiliary pilot air valve?

The Tiger valve MFH-3-..-S (with auxiliary pilot air) is reversible in the pressure range and can be used closed or open when dead or as a pressure deflector, and therefore has the same functions as a MOFH with auxiliary pilot air.

No, this is not allowed. Only valves of the same type can be supplied with air on a manifold block.

Which valve can be used in the vacuum range without auxiliary pilot air?

When the working pressure is very low or even in the vacuum range, the directional control valve must either be operated via auxiliary pilot air or it must be a directly actuated valve. The fast-switching valves MHE2, MHE3 and MHE4 are directly actuated and can therefore also be used in the vacuum range without auxiliary pilot air.

Does Festo offer valves for an operating pressure of up to 16 bar?

Yes, the ISO and mini ISO valves can be used up to an operating pressure of 16 bar in the auxiliary pilot air versions. However, the pilot pressure is limited to 10 bar.

Do Festo valves have a protective circuit for the solenoid coils?

The plug sockets with cable that have a LED display have integrated varistors or breakdown diodes to protect the circuit.
Alternatively, there are the illuminating seals MF-LD, MC-LD, MV-LD, ME-LD and MEB-LD which also have an integrated protective circuit in the 24 volt version.

Does Festo have valves for liquid media?

Yes, the brass or stainless steel version of valve VZWM can be used for liquid media. Ball valves, available in brass or stainless steel, can also be used and can be pneumatically operated on request.

Do valves exist for which the switching positions can be sensed using proximity switches?

Yes, Festo offers various ISO valves that meet this specific requirement.

Some valves have PK-3 in their type designation. Was does that mean?

The type designation PK-... means that the tube is connected to a tube nipple. The number at the end of the designation PK-... (e.g. PK.3) indicates the tubing inner diameter. A suitable tube would be a PU-3, for instance.
Our standard tubing PUN-4x0.75 can also be used in this case. However, a greater force is needed to push the tube onto the nipple.

Do Festo valves have UL or CSA certification?

Many Festo valves have UL/CSA certification. Unlike in Europe however, there is no certificate for this. For confirmation of whether a particular valve is listed according to UL, please check the
UL website.

Are there valves/cylinders specially designed for the automotive sector?

There are cylinders, valves and accessories specially designed for the automotive sector. These are listed in separate automotive catalogues which are available on CD-ROM in German/English/Spanish, order number 53836.

How can I test whether a valve is defective?

If the air blows out of silencer port 3 or 5, there is a simple trick for testing the valve.

If working port 2 is set in the case of a 5/2-way or 5/3-way valve and the air blows out of port 5, the tubing at the port must be loosened. If the air continues to blow out of the valve, the valve is defective, whereas if the air blows out of the tubing, the component behind the valve (usually a drive) is defective.

If working port 4 is set and the air blows out of port 3, the tubing at port 2 is loosened. If the air blows out of the tube, the drive is defective, whereas if the air continues to blow out of the valve, the valve is defective.

What do the two numerals (2/2, 3/2, 4/2, 5/2, 5/3) mean in the valve designation?

The first numeral specifies the number of pneumatic ports, the second number specifies the number of switching positions.
Example: A 2/2-way valve has 2 working lines and 2 switching positions.

Is the pin allocation for the power supply the same for all valve terminals?

The pin allocation for the power supply is not the same for all valve terminals.

For all 4-pin M12 and M18 power supply connectors, the pin allocation is:

PIN 1 = 24 volt system

PIN 2 = 24 volt load

PIN 3 = 0 volts

PIN 4 = FE.

Which M12 plug codings are there for valve terminals?

Festo uses three different plug codings: A, B and D-coding.

A-coding is for actuator-sensor plug connections and for DeviceNet
B-coding is for Fieldbus connections for Profibus and Interbus (not included in the Festo product range)
D-coding is for Industrial Ethernet, Profinet, Ethernet/IP and EtherCat

Are Festo valve terminals diagnostics-capable?

All valve terminals from Festo which are actuated via a fieldbus are diagnostics-capable (e.g. detection of undervoltage, short circuit) and can be evaluated via LEDs or via diagnostic bits in the master control.

What is the name of the replacement type for the Profibus fieldbus node FB9?

The replacement type for all terminal types is FB13. The relevant GSD is needed. In some cases the fieldbus plug will need to be adapted.

How can a 16-bit analogue value be correctly displayed with CPX terminals?

First please note that Festo's modules use the Motorola number format. Most PLCs, however, use the Intel number format. Consequently plausible values cannot be displayed.

Remedy: carry out a byte swap in the PLC program by swapping the low byte with the high byte. With CPX release version 23 and later, you can also pre-set the format to Intel or Motorola using the GSD file, making the software byte swap unnecessary.

Can modules for the Festo CPI system be combined with modules for the Festo CP system?

Yes, modules from the two systems CP and CPI can be combined with one another. However, the conditions of the CP system (16 I/O and max. 2 modules) apply for CP nodes.

The cables KVI-CP-3-… are used as connecting cables in the CP/CPI system.

How high is the electrical power consumption of a valve terminal type CPV?

Example: a CPV14 terminal is fitted with 8 single-solenoid valves which are all actuated at the same time. 8 x 0.9W = 7.2W. That gives a current of 0.3A. Added to that is the intrinsic current consumption of about 100mA.

Is it permitted to use any CPV valve terminal for the explosive area?

NO! This must be checked separately for each valve terminal!

What is the difference between CPX and CPX metal?

With a CPX metal, the interlinking blocks are made of metal and are not connected via a tie rod as they are for a CPX. Instead, they are connected to each other with screws.

If the connection is the only metal part, then the term CPX metal is not used.

What is the difference between the Festo CP and the Festo CPI systems?

A CP extension string (CP bus node or CPV with CP extension string) allows you to connect a maximum of one output module with 16 outputs and one input module with 16 inputs.

A CPI extension string (CPX-CPI or CPV with CPI extension string) allows you to connect a maximum of 4 modules (input or output) with up to 32 inputs and 32 outputs.

Can VPPM valves be retrofitted to an MPA valve terminal?

Yes, VPPM valves can be retrofitted on an MPA valve terminal with a fieldbus connection.

In order to be able to use the VPPM valves, the fieldbus node must have the latest

What do I need to connect a Festo CPV valve terminal to a Siemens ET 200 Pro?

Unlike the Siemens ET 200X, the ET 200 Pro does not use the ET electrical connection feature.

Instead, it uses the IC feature for individual electrical connection.

The mounting attachments for connecting the Festo valve terminal to the Siemens ET200 Pro are supplied by Siemens.

In addition to these, you will also need a seal from Festo which fits between the valve terminal and the Siemens ET200 Pro.

Is there software for commissioning support for CPX terminals?

Go to the "Support" menu option and look under "Download Area: Software, drivers and firmware". Here you will find the CPX-Festo Maintenance Tool (CPX-FMT).

The CPX-FMT is a useful tool for commissioning, configuration and advanced diagnostics for a CPX valve terminal. If you are using an industrial Ethernet fieldbus node such as Ethernet/IP, ProfiNet and Modbus/TCP, the CPX-FMT can communicate directly with the CPX terminal via an Ethernet connection.
For conventional fieldbuses, the software can be connected to the CPX terminal via a USB adapter (type NEFC-M12G5-0.3-U1G5).

The closed function is achieved using a “type C” valve slice (2*3/2-way valve) and an additional CPV...-BS-5/3G-... component. This additional component is fitted to the underside of the valve or to the pneumatic multiple connector plate.

The addresses on the CPV valve terminal are allocated from left to right, while the addresses of the individual valve positions are allocated from front to back.

A valve position on the CPV valve terminal always occupies 2 addresses, even if it is equipped with a blanking plate or separating pressure plate. If a valve position is fitted with a bistable valve, the following allocation applies:

  • Pilot solenoid coil 14 occupies the less significant address
  • Pilot solenoid coil 12 occupies the more significant address

  In the case of single solenoid (monostable) valves, the more significant address is not used.

Can A/B slaves and normal slaves of AS-interface valve terminals be mixed in the same network?
This is generally possible without limitation. For example, 10 slaves and 20 A/B slaves connected to one master.

With the CPA valve terminal, one valve position occupies 1 or 2 addresses, depending on the interlinking block.

Even if an interlinking block is unused (vacant position, compressed air supply), the relevant addressed are occupied anyway.

What data is required to order additional or replacement valve slices for type CPV/CPA valve terminals?
Every valve slice has a part number. This is normally a 6-digit number. This number is sufficient. If you know the valve terminal, you can just use the code letter, e.g. M for 5/2-way mono.

Can the SFC12 function of a Siemens PLC be used with a CPX valve terminal on the Profibus DP?

Yes. However, the diagnostics address of the CPX valve terminal must be used as transfer address, not the Profibus address.

DCP (Device Control Protocol) is based on the protocols DHCP and DNS. It is used to set names, IP addresses and parameters. It also includes an identification service which can be used to find out which stations there are in the network.

Which processor does Festo use for its Profinet devices?

Festo uses an ERTEC 200 (2-port switch).

What does STP mean?
STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) detects loops and automatically switches off sub-sections. STP can also be used for redundancy purposes.

What does LLDP mean?
LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) detects neighbouring devices. Every device sends information about itself to its neighbouring devices. When a device is replaced, it receives this information automatically from its neighbouring devices.

What is the function of a one-way flow control valve?
The one-way control valve has the function of a flow control valve and a blocking function. The flow is only controlled in the preferred direction. In the other direction the air flows freely through the non-return valve.

What is the function of a flow control valve?
The flow control valve restricts the quantity of air that flows through the valve. The restriction operates in both flow directions.

Can cylinders and valves from Festo also be operated with unlubricated compressed air?

Most pneumatic components from Festo are designed for operation with filtered lubricated compressed air or filtered unlubricated compressed air. These components are subject to basic lubrication during assembly. They can be used without the need for a lubricator.
In all cases, a filter unit is required that removes contaminants of 40 microns. Where "filtered, unlubricated compressed air" is indicated as the medium for components, Festo subjects these to a random examination using filtered, unlubricated compressed air under test conditions.

Filters with a degree of filtration of 5 or 10 microns should be used when the technical data specifies this. In the case of highly contaminated air we recommend pre-filtering the air using a 40 micron filter.

We recommend operation with filtered, lubricated compressed air in places subject to extreme environmental and operating conditions. For example, this may involve extremely fast cylinder movements (of over 1 m/s).

Unlubricated operation is not possible once the system has already been operated with lubricated compressed air. Due to the fact that lubricated compressed air washes away the basic lubrication, the components must always be operated with lubricated compressed air during further use.
If you wish to convert your system to unlubricated compressed air, the basic lubrication must be reapplied on all components.

What does a 100% duty cycle mean?

Within DIN VDE 0580, the 100% duty cycle check simply covers the electric part of the solenoid coil. Festo adds a pneumatic test to this check.

The check, which checks for the worst case, constitutes a functional test of the solenoid. If the solenoid is also used on valve terminals, the 100% duty cycle check is carried out on it as an individual device and in block assembly.

Conditions:
The solenoids are operated with the maximum permissible voltage (S1 continuous operation in accordance with DIN VDE 0580).
The solenoids are located in a temperature cabinet at the maximum permissible ambient temperature (no convection).
The maximum permissible operating pressure is applied to the solenoids with closed working ports.

Implementation:
The solenoids are operated for at least 72 hours subject to the conditions listed above. Once this period of time has passed, the following checks are carried out:
Release behaviour when the current is switched off – release current measurement
Pick-up behaviour when the minimum operating voltage is applied immediately afterwards, subject to the pressure conditions least favourable for the pick-up
Leakage measurements
Once the results have been recorded, this process is repeated until the units being tested have reached a total duty cycle of at least 1000 hours or one of the termination criteria is met.
At the end of the 100% duty cycle check, the sealing nipples are optically checked for damage.

Termination criteria:
The release behaviour, pick-up behaviour or leakage measurements exceed or fall below the following limits:
Release current: > 1.0 mA
Pick-up voltage: > UN+10%
Leakage: > 10l/h

Does Festo offers cables with sockets which have UL certification?

All valves that have UL certification and a 24V coil voltage are approved by UL with the provision that Class 2 power supplies as per NEC must be used.


UL assumes that devices and components in a Class 2 circuit do not represent any fire or electric shock hazard, since Class 2 power supplies are limited in terms of both current and voltage and can thus be regarded as safe.
For this reason, no cables with explicit UL approval are required in Class 2 circuits.
The integration of Class 2 circuits into a particular overall system concept is ultimately regulated by the UL standard for the final product, the so-called end use standard. This is different for each product category and no general statement can therefore be made on this.

What does nominal flow rate qnN mean?

This value is the flow rate measured on a component under certain conditions. With the exception of pressure regulators, the conditions are: Primary pressure = 6 bar, secondary pressure = 5 bar.

Where can I obtain a UL/CSA certificate?

A UL or CSA permit does not include a certificate. The check as to whether a product really has the specified permits must be carried out directly at UL or CSA.
