Festo presented its wide range of products and services as well as forward-looking concepts for municipal and industrial water technology at IFAT 2016 in Munich.
Festo showed how the potential offered by Industry 4.0 for water treatment can be translated into more flexible production processes using modular automation. The application example for energy-autonomous automation showed how decentralised solutions can be used to supply remote plants independently of mains power. Festo also has innovative concepts to meet the growing requirements for employee training. For example, Festo Didactic together with EON Reality has developed 3D software offering virtual simulation of various tasks in a wastewater treatment plant for training purposes.
Modular automation: numbering up instead of scaling up
Flexible, reproducible and efficient water treatment
The option provided by the modular solution of adding autonomous modules means that a system can be expanded and adapted virtually infinitely. Visitors were able to see for themselves how simple this is at our hands-on model at the stand. The display showed nine modules comprising a valve terminal with controller. These could be easily made up into a wide range of plant configurations using a control terminal. An additional tablet also showed that remote configuration and visualisation are possible in real time.

Energy-autonomous automation in water technology
The manual operation of remote plants (e.g. rainwater retention basins) is costly in terms of both time and money. The answer is energy-autonomous automation using solar or wind power while operation and monitoring take place in a central control room. This principle was clearly put to the test at the Festo stand.
Virtual reality in technical training
In the context of Industry 4.0, employees need to have a high degree of self-management to be able to find their way in open, complex and dynamic situations in a targeted way. Virtual reality enables the students to address a wide range of situations and tasks, without any risk to the actual processes and workflows in the wastewater treatment plants. IFAT provided an opportunity for visitors to the stand to explore the virtual wastewater treatment plant and learn the best way to respond to faults and hazardous situations.
