A remote I/O system CPX-AP typically consists of the following components:

  • Bus Interface (CPX-AP module with fieldbus interface)

  • One or more AP modules, such as an I/O module or I/O link master

Configuring a remote I/O system CPX-AP means selecting these components and connecting them together for communication.

Connecting lines can be drawn between the connectors with the mouse in the ‘Topology Editor’ of the Festo Automation Suite to connect the modules and terminals of a remote I/O system.

Module addresses

The module addresses of the modules that are connected to a bus interface are displayed at the bottom of the relevant module graphic in ‘Topology Editor’. If the topology of the remote I/O system is changed, the module addresses are automatically updated. The addresses facilitate the configuration of AP-based systems in development environments of other manufacturers that do not support branched structures for field devices but instead expect a linear list of modules. The modules must then be inserted in ascending order of their addresses, regardless of the string to which they are physically connected.

Configuring system

  1. Open the ‘project section’ in the Festo Automation Suite.

  2. Add an appropriate device.

  3. Use the mouse to draw connecting lines between the connectors to connect the components of an IO-Link system.

    The connectors of the modules and the connections of the remote I/O system CPX-AP are shown in light blue. Only connectors that match can be connected, e.g. the connector XF20 (AP out) of a module with the connector XF 10 (AP in) of a different module of the remote I/O system CPX-AP.

Adding module

  1. Open the ‘Terminal’ panel in the ‘Parameterization’ context ⮫ Terminal panel.

  2. Select the appropriate modules from the device catalogue and place them in ‘Topology Editor’ (drag-and-drop).

    If a module in a string of the remote I/O system is marked and a new module is added by double-clicking on the name in the catalogue or with the ‘Add Device’ button, it is placed at a free position on the work space.

    For example, the device catalogue can be filtered by product families, module types or order code.

Copying or deleting modules

For quick setup of the appropriate topology for the CPX-AP remote I/O system, proceed as follows:

  1. Open project in the ‘Topology Editor’.

  2. Use the mouse to select one or more modules and terminals.

    The module is highlighted.

  3. Copy, paste or delete selected modules and terminals.

  1. Click on the first corner point in ‘Topology Editor’ and press and hold the left [mouse button].

    A frame is stretched from the starting point to the current mouse position.

  2. Drag the mouse pointer to the second corner point and release the mouse button.

    After releasing the [mouse button], all modules contained in the frame are selected.

Multiple selection by clicking and pressing [Shift] at the same time

  1. Press and hold the [Shift] key and select the required modules one by one by clicking on them.

    The selected modules are highlighted.

  2. Use the commands in the context menu to edit the selected modules.
