Program, configure and network systems: The commissioning of a production line or machine can take considerable time and costs. Especially for electrical applications, employees must have specialist knowledge and software know-how. This is too cumbersome, particularly for applications that execute simple movements. However, some products do not require any software of their own. This is made possible by the so-called "plug & work" principle.
With "plug & work" systems, machines or individual components configure themselves independently. They integrate themselves into the production process without any preliminary work by a software developer or engineer. No software activities or engineering are needed.
Standardized language saves time and money
To make the principle work, descriptions of the plants, machines and components must be available in a standardized language. Any software that "understands" this language can call up the data via a standardized and secure protocol. This works not only during initial commissioning, but also with every adjustment.
The "plug & work" principle considerably reduces the connection effort and costs. This is particularly advantageous for electrical applications that require simple movements. With such components, high investment costs and complex commissioning are not worthwhile for the plant operator. Due to digitalization, however, the demand for electrical solutions is increasing.
Simplified Motion Series – As simple as possible
With the Simplified Motion Series, Festo offers six different electric solutions that function precisely according to the "plug & work" principle. Integration is via two standard round connectors - without any software and without having to load or enter any system parameters first. They perform simple movements with a reduced selection of parameters that can be set directly on the drive, but also remotely via IO-Link.
Motion is carried out directly on the actuator by an integrated controller unit, which in turn saves space in the control cabinet. By combining integrated motor, controller and actuator, the products are offered as complete pre-assembled and pre-parameterized units.
With their simplified functionality, the drives are suitable for simple movements between two mechanical end positions. In addition, they offer optimized motion characteristics such as damped extension and retraction to the end positions or a simplified pressing and clamping function.
