Systematically save on compressed air costs

Nowadays, energy efficiency is a key issue for industrial companies worldwide. Rising energy costs and increasing environmental regulations are forcing companies to rethink and optimise their energy consumption. In this interview, Heiko Fleischhacker, Energy Efficiency Expert and Certified Auditor at Festo, explains the added value that companies can gain from a systematic compressed air energy efficiency audit. This is because the use of compressed air is often not considered, even though simple and sustainable energy savings can be achieved.

Sustainable and energy-efficient production

High energy prices, increasing cost pressures and a growing awareness of climate protection all mean that energy efficiency is a critical topic for companies. Optimising energy consumption is particularly important in the manufacturing industry. Compressed air generation and usage are often overlooked. Measures such as eliminating leakage and optimising the pressure level reduce energy costs and increase the overall productivity (OEE) of the systems. Sven Lensdorf, Head of Sales Operations Services at Festo, explains how innovation and consultation reduce the CO₂ footprint for the environment.

A new ice age is dawning in the Dutch ice cream factory of the international brand Ben & Jerry’s – thanks to digitalisation. Smart products and solutions from Festo are supporting this emergence into the new world. With the energy efficiency module MSE6-E2M, Festo dashboards and the CPX-IOT gateway, the ice cream manufacturer can always keep an eye on its compressed air consumption costs and reduce them sustainably.

What does a pencil sharpening system have to do with energy efficiency? Quite a lot! In the “Experience Energy Efficiency” exhibition in the Festo corporate head office in Esslingen-Berkheim, the pencil sharpening system shows how one optimisation measure for energy efficiency combines with another one to produce an overall concept with impressive energy credentials through the reduction of friction and weight, recovery of energy, selection of the right components and efficient actuation and control.

Festo Energy Saving Services reduce the operating costs of industrial plants the world over. Hidden sources of errors can be found by analysing compressed air generation, consumption and quality as well as through targeted leakage detection. At Tate & Lyle in the Netherlands, the energy efficiency experts uncovered losses of 6,000 l/min.
