Bionics4Education from Festo

Bionic training kit – Bionic Fish, Bionic Elephant, Bionic Chameleon

For billions of years, nature has successfully created natural, adaptive strategies for survival. The organisms and ecosystems that surround us face many of the same challenges that we do. Bionics is all about learning from nature and applying this knowledge to technical challenges. Engineers do this by studying many natural role models and using their examples to develop optimum solutions and technologies that provide very simple answers to complex problems. Festo has been developing innovations inspired by bionics for many years in the Bionic Learning Network and works to find answers to current technical challenges for industrial applications. These solutions offer inspiration and are a great way to learn and apply the acquired knowledge to automation technology.

Bionics Kit

An interdisciplinary team of engineers, designers, IT specialists and biologists from the Bionic Learning Network has worked with education experts from the training provider Festo Didactic to develop Bionics4Education. The goal is to get young people interested in and excited about STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and bionic work through projects inspired by bionics. The educational concept combines a practical Bionics Kit for hands-on, solution-oriented learning and a digital learning environment.

The Bionics Kit offers students a fascinating opportunity to delve into the world of bionics and get to grips with project-based work inspired by nature. As bionics acts as a link between biology and engineering, the Bionics Kit is a perfect addition to our integrative STEM educational programme.

Interactive Learning Poster – Bionics Kit

The Interactive Learning Poster is used alongside the Bionics Kit in the lesson. The interactive learning path combines analogue and digital learning in a fun way and also makes effective use of digital tools such as mobile devices in the classroom.

Bionic Flower

The Bionic Flower is an experiment kit inspired by the plant world.

It opens and closes its petals in response to external influences such as light or an object coming close to it. These functional mechanisms are simulated with sensors and actuators and can be learned by students in the classroom through play.

The bio-inspired design applies the principles from the plant world to technology by means of scientific and technical questions. It is an ideal way to round off the teaching of curriculum topics in STEM education.
