Contactless transport beyond system limits

Levitating transfer of objects beyond system boundaries not only makes longer process chains possible without contact. It also permits low-maintenance operation in settings with strict cleanliness requirements.

Multiple functions with only one cryostat: the SupraMultitool illustrates how different automation tasks can be simultaneously implemented with a single system flexibly and contactlessly. The stable, linear conveying and the safe, contactless rotation of a workpiece carrier can be seen.

The design clearly shows the advantages of a superconducting bearing in terms of stability and reliability compared to electromagnetic solutions. In the SupraMultitool exhibit, a handling system places a workpiece carrier one after the other on two different magnets with various bearings and movements in order to demonstrate the flexible applications.

SupraLoop: combination transport systems

The combination of different transport systems with superconductor technology is demonstrated at the SupraLoop exhibit. Three different systems are installed along a circular path to this end: a conventional conveyor belt, the Multi-Carrier-System MCS® and a superconducting system.

Several carriers are transported on the SupraLoop. The magnetization on the underside of the carriers provides both the coupling to the contactless drive of the Multi-Carrier-System® and the levitating effect for the SupraMotion system. Via a deflector, a carrier can be transferred from the conveyor to the cryostat-containing superconductors and then, coupled to the cryostat, moved using levitating motion – even through partitions and walls.

Potential uses for work in cleanrooms

One possible application of this principle is the decoupling of individual transporting slides from a machining process in order to move them into a cleanroom without contact, or to process the objects on them with gases or liquids in a sealed area.

SupraJunction: transfer of plates

With the help of SupraJunction, Festo demonstrates contactless transport of objects across enclosed surfaces and through locks. Two support plates levitate above the superconductors thanks to magnetic rails installed underneath them. They transport small glass containers around a circuit and are transferred from one superconductor element on one transport system to another on a different handling system.

During contactless transfer from one cryostat to the other, an electromagnet that’s fastened to an external axis pulls the support plate to the next cryostat in the active direction of the magnetic rails. And thus Festo has implemented automatic transfer from one system to another on the horizontal plane for the first time, permitting levitating transport in long process chains and across system boundaries.

Simple cleaning and protected transport

The plates levitate over a shallow basin of water throughout the entire process. Consequently, the support system and the automation technology are fully separated from one another, which protects the components against contamination and permits very easy cleaning – ideal for applications in the packaging industry, laboratory automation, medical technology, food or the pharmaceuticals industry.

SupraCycle: transfer of levitating pucks

SupraCycle demonstrates active transfer of a levitating permanent magnet from one superconductor automation module to another for the first time. Three cryostats which can be rotated 360° are mounted on a base plate. Two magnetic workpiece carriers are each frozen to the superconductors in the cryostats with a levitation distance of a few millimeters and are then transferred, one at a time, from one cryostat to the next. A device on the cryostats provides the necessary integrated intelligence.

Cross-system transport

Potential applications can also be derived from the SupraCycle, for example contactless transfer of a workpiece carrier between two systems or across system boundaries would be conceivable, as shown at this exhibit based on the example of glass bottles. And thus for the first time, process chains of any desired length are made possible.
