Roughly 95% of our standard products are already copper-free. For example, cylinder guides are frequently made of plastic.
Beyond this, we’ve optimized additional products for targeted use in the dry room and have replaced copper-containing components with copper-free ones. Roughly half of our copper-free products belong to the core product range and are identified with a full blue star. This means they’re always available from stock worldwide and are ready for shipment within 24 hours.
There aren’t any binding industrial standards you must align yourself to. Nor does the VDMA roadmap include any corresponding information to date.
Copper-free solutions are a question of a quality assurance: even minimal contamination with abraded copper can cause problems for the production of lithium-ion batteries. The copper particles react with the aluminum electrodes, which impairs performance and results in the formation of crystals. Crystals and other electrically conductive particles that are larger than 5 to 10 µm can perforate the separator foil and cause short-circuits.

Yes. You can use our standard components in dry room environments without hesitation. This has been substantiated with laboratory tests and on the basis of experience with test systems, as well as in industrial production applications. We conducted testing under ambient conditions with a dew point of -65°C. In all cases, Festo’s products retain their quality characteristics in the dry room, especially where wear and performance are concerned.
