Success story: future battery manufacturing

Electric vehicles are in vogue. However, their success depends on high-performance, cost-effective batteries. The AMPLiFII pilot project is laying the foundation for a new generation of electric vehicle batteries in the UK. The project includes innovative automation technology from Horizon Instruments with a Festo pick & place solution.

Electromobility and automation manufacturers have faith in us

In 2012, Festo started supplying the global growth market for electromobility with customized solutions. Today, Festo advises and supplies major global players like Tesla and Lucid Motors.

The key elements of Festo’s success in this area are its broad portfolio, including copper-free products, and its services and engineering tools. We also have worldwide teams with specialized know-how and solutions competence, who provide customers with expert advice for project planning and conceptualization.

What does “copper-free” mean at Festo?

Fundamentally speaking, there are no binding and explicit standards for copper-free products as required in battery manufacturing. As a result, Festo aligns itself to common market criteria. We thoroughly discuss the requirements that copper-free products need to fulfill with our customers. This has resulted in the following guideline: for Festo products, copper-free means that ...

  • ... Bearings, guides and all other parts that are subject to wear are entirely copper-free.
  • ... The amount of copper included in the alloys used for all other parts of the product is less than 6.0%.

Cables, motors, PCBs and pilot valves are excluded from the copper-free requirement.

Which products are copper-free?

Roughly 95% of our standard products are already copper-free. For example, cylinder guides are frequently made of plastic.

Beyond this, we’ve optimized additional products for targeted use in the dry room and have replaced copper-containing components with copper-free ones. An overview of Festo’s copper-free products can be found in the special catalog entitled “Copper-free pneumatic and electrical components." Even if you don’t find the copper-free variant you’re looking for in the catalog, there’s almost always a simple solution. Just ask your contact person at Festo.

Which products are available from stock?

Roughly half of our copper-free products belong to the core product range and are identified with a full blue star. This means they’re always available from stock worldwide and are ready for shipment within 24 hours.

When do I need copper-free products?

There aren’t any binding industrial standards you must align yourself to. Nor does the VDMA roadmap include any corresponding information to date.

Copper-free solutions are a question of a quality assurance: even minimal contamination with abraded copper can cause problems for the production of lithium-ion batteries. The copper particles react with the aluminum electrodes, which impairs performance and results in the formation of crystals. Crystals and other electrically conductive particles that are larger than 5 to 10 µm can perforate the separator foil and cause short-circuits.

If you’re uncertain whether your application requires copper-free components, our application experts would be happy to provide you with quick and reliable advice and assistance.

Do the products survive the dry room?

Yes. You can use our standard components in dry room environments without hesitation. This has been substantiated with laboratory tests and on the basis of experience with test systems, as well as in industrial production applications. We conducted testing under ambient conditions with a dew point of -65°C. In all cases, Festo’s products retain their quality characteristics in the dry room, especially where wear and performance are concerned.
