Joint development in automotive body manufacture


The job: Reduce the cycle time for electrode milling! For static welding gun systems, Festo developed a customized pivoted arm according to the specifications of Volvo and ABB. This brings the electrode milling device to the electrodes after a defined number of welding points have been carried out.

“In recent years we have found solutions which have enabled us to cut the cycle times for electrode milling by well over half,” says Leif Winberg, systems engineer for resistance welding at Volvo in Olofström. With 300 welding robots in use at Olofström, this was another milestone in the search for shorter cycle times and therefore higher productivity.
