Standardized and Highly Flexible?

Do you want to benefit from the advantages of standardized production and still remain as flexible as possible? The Festo Motion Terminal offers a whole host of benefits across the entire value chain – from the conceptualization to the modernization of your machine.

Benefits at Every Step of the Process

Conceptualize

MotionTerminal: conceptualize

Reduced Complexity and Engineering Costs, Maximum Standardization

This stage is where you lay the foundation for your system. The Festo Motion Terminal supports you in this process in the following ways:

  • A standardized platform concept for the system and its modules thanks to the product’s high level of flexibility. One valve slice provides the functionality of over 50 individual components.
  • Reduced complexity, as only one type of technology covers a wide range of applications.
  • Reduced engineering costs in the design and development stage, as functions are now linked to the Motion Apps. This makes adaptation, modification, and design much faster and more flexible.
  • Lower follow-up costs for subsequent modifications: since changes can be made without modifying the hardware, the 1-10-100 rule can be considerably mitigated. According to this rule, the costs of an undetected error increase by a factor of ten at each stage.
  • Built-in know-how protection: no matter which function you assign to a Festo Motion Terminal valve, it always looks the same from the outside. Because functions are assigned via Motion App, unauthorized parties will have no way of quickly analyzing and identifying the functionalities and design of your system.

Design and Program

MotionTerminal: design

Faster Design, Less Programming Effort

Accounting for approx. 25% to 30% of total life cycle costs, this stage is one of the largest cost components in mechanical and system engineering. Using the Festo Motion Terminal will help you cut these costs.

  • Faster design with fewer part numbers, fewer CAD models, simplified assembly drawings, and unambiguous interfaces.
  • Quickly and easily modify functions even after the design is complete by assigning new functions via Motion App – without having to replace the hardware.
  • A space-saving solution since fewer components are required. For example, one valve can be used for two proportional pressure applications – saving 50% of the installation space.
  • Reduced programming effort, as predefined Motion Apps and functions can be used, depending on the application.

Procure

MotionTerminal: procure

Shorter Parts Lists, Reduced Logistics and Warehousing Costs

This stage involves requesting a wealth of data, such as delivery dates, prices, supplier details, internal stock locations, etc., and then entering and maintaining it in the ERP system. The Festo Motion Terminal offers you the following advantages:

  • Shorter parts lists, less effort, and fewer errors, as many of the additional components previously required for other functions – e.g. one-way flow control valves, shock absorbers, and pressure force sensors – are no longer necessary.
  • Lower costs for subsequent data administration and maintenance, as only one hardware component is required.
  • No need to reorder hardware when making modifications, as any additional functions required can be purchased in the form of a software package.
  • Reduced logistics and warehousing costs and a better overview, as a single product can replace the functionality of over 50 individual components.

Assemble

MotionTerminal: assemble

Reduced Assembly Workload, Identical Interfaces

In order to maximize efficiency, solutions are required with the maximum number of functions built in. The Festo Motion Terminal offers you the following advantages:

  • Reduced assembly workload and fewer mistakes, since you have to assemble and mount fewer individual components.
  • Simplified assembly, as the interfaces remain the same.
  • Fewer performance tests, as the unit covers entire solution packages, such as Soft Stop.
  • Fewer leaks thanks to immediate detection and localization with the “Leakage Diagnostics” app, as well as a lower risk of leakage thanks to the reduced number of components.

Bring into Operation

MotionTerminal: bring into operation

No Manual Adjustments, Simplified Configuration and Parameterization of Complex Solutions

For a system to run at its best, all of its components must be harmonized when bringing it into operation. The Festo Motion Terminal significantly simplifies this process for you.

  • Simplified configuration and parameterization of more complex solutions, for example when specifying travel times or pneumatic pressures.
  • No more manual adjustments and fine-tuning as was previously necessary, for example, when travel speeds were adjusted by means of flow control valves. This also prevents tampering.
  • Easily create identical pneumatic systems: the digital apps can easily duplicate the original and transfer it to other Festo Motion Terminals via parameter sets. This saves up to 30% and means identical configurations can be used for different systems.
  • Self-optimizing systems minimize power consumption, e.g. in the event of changes in load.

Operate

MotionTerminal: operate

Rapid System Adaptation, Energy-Efficient System Operation, Lower Costs for Spare Parts Storage

High overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is essential to achieving maximum productivity and the most cost-effective operation of a system. The Festo Motion Terminal will increase the productivity of your system.

  • Reduced downtimes thanks to fast reconfiguration and system adaptation without needing to change the hardware, e.g. for format changeovers and flexible production in line with Industry 4.0
  • Improved preventive maintenance is possible because of apps such as “Leakage Diagnostics,” which can accurately detect leaks before they lead to machine downtimes.
  • More energy-efficient system operation and thus faster amortization thanks to piezo technology and ECO apps. For example, using the “ECO drive” for a 32 x 100 DSBC cylinder can save up to 100 euros in energy costs over the course of the first year (cycle rate: 2–3 seconds, weight: 0.5 kg, two-shift operation).
  • Significantly reduced costs for stocking spare parts: if, for example, the cost of a storage location is assumed to be between 30 and 70 euros per year and component, the integration of more than 50 individual items results in enormous potential savings by only needing to stock a single valve slice.
  • Quick and easy system maintenance: the large number of built-in functions speeds up troubleshooting and at the same time reduces potential sources of error.
  • Increased component service life: the “Soft Stop” Motion App, for example, completely replaces wear-susceptible dampers – and simultaneously optimizes cycle times.

Modernize

MotionTerminal: modernize

Simplified Conversion, Fast Tuning, Enhanced Energy Efficiency

Modernization can serve several purposes, such as increasing system performance, expanding the product range, or reducing ongoing operating costs. The Festo Motion Terminal makes modernization quicker, easier, and more cost-effective.

  • Simplified conversion and easy tuning of entire series, as the functions are defined via software (apps). You only have to copy the optimized parameter sets.
  • Reduced pneumatic energy costs with minimal modification effort: simply switch out the valve manifold and use ECO apps. The existing actuators remain in place.
  • Increased reusability due to the high level of flexibility offered by using just a single piece of hardware.
