- Does the type DSNU-... cylinder exist with a square piston rod?
-
In an earlier release, the type designation for a standard cylinder of the type DSNU-... with a square piston rod was DSNUL-... Today, this cylinder is produced with the designation DSNU-...-...-Q. The suffix "Q" indicates the square piston rod. Such cylinders are processed using module numbers; this means that the part number only defines the basic cylinder. All features, such as stroke length or the square piston rod, are selected individually within the modular system. The modular system enables combinations that were previously only possible via special development. The table compares the previous part numbers and type designations with the new part numbers and designations.

- Yes, such cylinders are high-force cylinders. In the case of this type of cylinder, the piston area is increased simply by having the same area working several times in succession. The following compact cylinders can be ordered from Festo as high-force cylinders (tandem cylinders): ADNH-... , ADVUT-...
- Does Festo also supply screws for mounting the type ADVC and AEVC pneumatic cylinders?
- Yes, since some of the screw sizes cannot be obtained everywhere, the mounting screws can also be ordered from Festo. If you require further information, contact the Technical Hotline directly.
- Can type AEVU-... single-acting cylinders be used as double-acting cylinders?
- Cylinders from the AEVU-... series with nominal piston sizes of 32 and larger (except with diameter of 50) can also be used as double-acting cylinders. Unscrew the filter part in the exhaust port, and replace it with a fitting (e.g. type QS-...). Please note: The force of the cylinder is lower when against the effective force of the spring (by the amount of the spring force) and higher in the opposite direction (by the amount of the spring force). If you require a cylinder in size 25 or 50 with spring return for use as a double-acting cylinder, all you have to do is indicate on your order that cylinder type AEVU-… is to be used as a double-acting cylinder.
- Can type stopper cylinders STA/F be used as double-acting cylinders?
- This type of cylinder can also be used as a double-acting cylinder. To do so, all you need to do is unscrew the filter part in the exhaust port and replace it with a fitting (e.g. type QS-...). Please note: The force of the cylinder is lower when against the effective force of the spring (by the amount of the spring force) and higher in the opposite direction (by the amount of the spring force).
- Are compact cylinders from Festo only available with the standard stroke lengths listed?
- Most compact cylinders can be produced with any stroke length up to the specified maximum stroke.
- Where on the tandem/high-force cylinders, types DNCT, ADVUT and ADNH can position sensing be done using proximity sensors ?
-
Only the foremost piston (piston rod side) has a magnet for sensing, so position sensing can only ever occur in the sensor slot area on the foremost profile barrel.
Rodless cylinders
- Where can rodless cylinders be used?
-
They can be used in several places, such as on conveyor belts or for vertical lifting in tight spaces. One advantage of rodless cylinders is that they have identical cylinder force in both directions. In addition, it is not necessary to observe the buckling force of the piston rod when using these cylinders.
- Does using shock absorbers reduce the stroke of a rodless drive DGPL?
-
No. The shock absorber retainers can be mounted far enough outward for the stroke not to be affected by the use of shock absorbers.
- Are all required attachments already included with delivery of a linear drive type DGC, if you use the modular product system to select a variant with an intermediate position module?
-
Delivery includes the shock absorber retainer for the slide unit type DADP, one or two type adjustable stops KYC (for mechanical end-position limiting) and the shock absorber type YSR or YSRW.
However, the external intermediate position module can only be selected in the product configurator if a shock absorber and mechanical end-position limiter have already been selected.
An existing drive can also be retrofitted with an intermediate position module by ordering the corresponding accessories (DADP, DADM, KYC and YSR(W)).

- On which end cap of the type DGP/L drive are the supply ports located as standard?
-
The two sizes 8 and 12 are only available with a supply port in each end cap. With sizes 18 and higher, both supply ports are located on one side (exception: variant "D2" which has a supply port on each side). In the standard design, the air supply ports are in the right-hand end cap (runner upwards and slide unit to the rear - see illustration).
- Can a type DGPL-... rodless cylinder be converted from a plain-bearing guide to a guide with ball bearing elements?
- This is possible. For details, please contact our After-Sales Service.
- How often do the ball bearing elements for type DGPL/DGEL drives need to be lubricated?
- Ball bearing elements installed up to the year 2000 are indicated by a black wiper seal and must be lubricated every 400 km. Newer ball bearing elements with grey wiper seals need to be relubricated every 5000 km or at the latest after 3 years. Relubrication should be carried out more often in the following cases: Strokes > 2000 mm Strokes < 50 mm Speeds > 2 m/s Increased accumulation of dirt in surrounding areas The slide must be moved on the rail during the lubrication process. (Permissible lubrication greases: KP2K as defined by DIN 51825)
- What greases are approved for lubricating the ball bearing elements for type DGPL/DGEL drives?
- KP2K grease as defined by DIN 51825, e.g. Shell Retinax A Klüber Centoplex 2EP Fuchs Notropeen LXG 00 (for diameters up to 18 mm) Rhenus Norlith STM 2 (for diameters of 25 mm and more)

- Yes, provided that no other central support is necessary, the DGC-... can be mounted using at least two profile mounting attachments.
- How are the slot nuts fitted in the slot of the profile barrel for drives DGC-...?
- A slot nut can only be fitted in the slot when the cover of the DGC is removed. The slot nut can then be inserted into the slot on the profile from the side.
- Can the moment compensator (FKP) for a rodless DGP-... cylinder be mounted in connection with a clamping unit (KV/KH)?
- Moment compensator (FKP) for rive units type DGP-... can be mounted with a clamping unit for the complete range of sizes.
- What should you bear in mind regarding the stroke length when ordering a linear drive DGPL/DGC with additional slide?
-
Installing additional slides reduces the selected stroke length by at least the amount of the slide length(s). If the slides are also mounted on the guide rail with a certain spacing between them, the stroke length is further reduced by the length of the spacing. To return to the originally intended travel distance, the length of the slide and, where applicable, the spacing between the slides must be added to the stroke length when ordering.
- Can shock absorber retainers KYP for a linear drive DGPL be mounted on the protected version?
- Shock absorber retainers KYP fit below the cover of a protected version. Before mounting the KYP, you must unscrew the screws on the cover. The cover can then simply be pushed aside and the shock absorber retainer can be mounted.
- Can a drive DGPL be replaced by a DGC?
- The DGC-GF/KF is compatible with the DGPL-GF/KF. However, an adapter foot (HPC-xx-SH/SO) is needed to do this, which is used to keep the same dimensions from foot mounting to slide mounting. The slide interface of the DGC-GF/KF is identical to that of the DGPL-GF/GF. The DGC-G (basic drive) is not compatible with the DGP (without guide).
Rotary and semi-rotary actuators
- Is the cushioning time taken into account in the diagrams "permissible mass moment of inertia as a function of swivel time" for semi-rotary drive versions with hydraulic shock absorbers?
-
The cushioning time is included in the swivel time for semi-rotary drives DRQD. For the swivel modules DSM, the swivel time is only shown up to the point where the shock absorber hits the stop. The cushioning time of the shock absorber must be added to this in order to obtain the total swivel time (see catalogue documentation for values).
- How is the supply port on the left (AL) and on the right (AR) defined in the case of the DRQD rotary drive?
-
The sensor slot is at the rear and the drive shaft is at the top. If the supply ports are located on the left-hand side (see illustration), it is the AL variant (supply port on the left). In contrast, if the supply ports are located on the right-hand side, it is the AR variant (supply port on the right).
- Do the load specifications “static” and “dynamic” for drive type DRQD relate to the behaviour of the drive or the behaviour of the load?
- The static and dynamic axial and radial forces relate to the drive. This means that if the drive is not moving, the static load values apply, even if the load itself is not static.
- How can the end position be adjusted on a DRQD-… rotary drive?
-
Rotary drives DRQD-... are adjusted at the factory to a nominal rotation angle (90° / 180° / 360° / X°)
To change the rotation angle:
Rotary drive with end position cushioning DRQD-…-PPVJ:
- To increase the rotation angle: turn the adjusting screw anti-clockwise
- To decrease the rotation angle: turn the adjusting screw clockwise
Rotary drive with shock absorber DRQD-...-YSRJ:
1. Loosen size 1 hex nut (width across flats: 1)
2. Set the rotation angle on the size 2 hex nut using an open-ended spanner
- To increase the rotation angle: turn the adjusting screw anti-clockwise
- To decrease the rotation angle: turn the adjusting screw clockwise
3. Tighten the size 1 hex nut.
- Do type DSM semi-rotary actuators also exist with a through, hollow piston rod?
- Yes, the flanged shaft variant DSM-...-FW has a through hole in sizes 12 and greater. The sizes DSM-12 and DSM-16 both have an M5 thread and a hole diameter of 4.2mm. DSM-25 and DSM-32 have a 1/8" thread and a hole diameter of 8.6mm, and size DSM-40 has a 1/4" thread and a hole diameter of 11.5mm.
- What is the position of the woodruff key for a drive DRQ?
-
When you are looking towards the drive shaft, the woodruff key is at the top. The drive shaft then moves clockwise.
- Which slot nut fits into the slot nut profile of the flanged shaft with energy through-feed (SD..., E...) on the quarter turn actuators DRQD-16...50? (Rotary drives and quarter turn actuators)

- Why does the piston size for the mini slide type DGSL not match the specifications in the type code?
-
This was done to make the mini slide DGSL more comparable with the previous mini slide of type SLT, which has two pistons and which would therefore have greater cylinder force for the same size when compared with the DGSL. For this reason, the piston on the DGSL is always one step bigger than the type code specifies, so as to give a similar cylinder force as the slide SLT for the same model size.

- A single-acting cylinder advances or retracts by means of air and is moved back in the opposite direction to its normal position by means of an integrated spring. With a double-acting cylinder, movement in both directions is by means of air.
- Which shock absorber belongs to which SLT-... slide?

- Drive characteristics: If the drive is not moving, the static load values apply, even if the load itself is not static.
- Can the guide backlash be set on the mini slide SLT?
-
No, the bearings are tensioned during installation so that they are backlash-free.
- Can the type SPZ slide unit be sensed from both sides using a proximity sensor?
- In the case of this cylinder the proximity sensor is mounted on a sensor rail. The sensor rail can theoretically be fitted on both sides of the drive unit. However, as a permanent magnet is only inserted into the slide on one side, sensing via a proximity sensor is only possible on that one side.
- What is the maximum tightening torque allowable with EGZ-... cylinders?
-
The tightening torque applied to the male threads of cartridge cylinders EGZ-... must not exceed the following limits.
Cylinder size Max. tightening torque

- Does Festo also supply cylinders for a temperature range down to -40° C?
-
Festo offers cylinders for the low temperature range down to -40° C.
- Is it possible to obtain a pneumatic cylinder with a through, hollow piston?
- Festo has several series of pneumatic cylinders which can also be ordered with a through, hollow piston rod. These are cylinder types ADVU-..., DZF-..., DNC-..., DMM-..., DSL-..., DSM-... and DSRL. The through-hollow variant is labelled S20. E.g. DNC-32-100-PPV-A-S20
- Does the proximity sensor have to be ordered separately in the case of cylinders with magnetic pistons?
- Festo offers a wide variety of different proximity sensors. It is not possible for Festo to specify the ideal proximity sensor in advance. Proximity sensors must therefore be ordered separately.
- Can telescopic cylinders also be obtained from Festo?
- Festo offers cylinders in many different shapes and kinds. Nevertheless, the range of products we sell does not cover everything. Telescopic cylinders are among the few items that we do not offer.
- Can cylinders and valves from Festo also be operated with unlubricated compressed air?
- In terms of their materials and processing, most Festo pneumatic components are designed for operation with filtered, lubricated compressed air or filtered, unlubricated compressed air. These components are subject to basic lubrication during assembly and can therefore be used without a lubricator In all cases, a filter unit is required that removes contaminants of 40 microns. Where "filtered, unlubricated compressed air" is indicated as the medium for components, Festo subjects them to a random tests using filtered, unlubricated compressed air under test conditions. Filters with a degree of filtration of 5 or 10 microns should be used when required by the technical specifications. In the case of highly contaminated air we recommend pre-filtering the air using a 40 micron filter. We recommend operation with filtered, lubricated compressed air in places subject to extreme environmental and operating conditions, such as where extremely fast cylinder movements are performed (over 2 m/s). Unlubricated operation is not possible if the system has already been operated with lubricated compressed air. Due to the fact that lubricated compressed air washes away the basic lubrication, the components must always be operated with lubricated compressed air during further use. If you wish to change over your system to unlubricated compressed air, you will need to replace the basic lubrication on all components.
- What is the difference between 2-wire proximity sensors and 3-wire proximity sensors?
- Proximity sensors usually have an integrated LED. In the case of a 2-wire proximity sensor, therefore, the LED is connected in series, causing a voltage drop of 3...4 volts. In contrast, in the case of a 3-wire proximity sensor, the LED is integrated in parallel with the result that it does not cause a voltage drop. 2-wire reed switches without an LED are also not subject to a voltage drop.
- Can pneumatic cylinders also be operated using liquid media (low-pressure hydraulics)?
- The seals of pneumatic drive units are not designed to be suitable for use with hydraulic media. In addition, there is a danger of the sealing material being chemically corroded by the fluid.
- What force can a cylinder exert?
-
The theoretical force of a pneumatic cylinder can be calculated using the following formula:
F [N] = p [bar] x A [cm²] x 10Example: A cylinder with a nominal diameter of 100 mm has an area of 78.5 cm². At an operating pressure of 6 bar, this area exerts a force of approx. 4700 N (78.5 x 6 x 10).
- What is the maximum permissible pressure and tensile load on FK-... self-aligning rod couplers?

- Provided that a certain degree of overtravel and undershoot up to the standstill position is unproblematic for the application, piloted non-return valves can perform this function. These low-cost valves block the air in the two cylinder chambers and therefore prevent the cylinder from moving further.
- How quickly can a cylinder travel at a certain operating pressure?
-
- How is the travel speed of a pneumatic cylinder regulated?
- The travel speed of a pneumatic cylinder is adjusted via the air flow rate. There are two different options for doing so: controlling the air flowing in (supply air flow control) or the air flowing out (exhaust air flow control). The air flow rate is usually controlled using a one-way flow control valve.
- What is the task of pneumatic end position cushioning and how does it work?
- Kinetic energy is calculated as the product of mass and speed (J = 0.5 m x v²). A cylinder in end position must be capable of transforming this energy without incurring damage. The mass that a cylinder needs to be able to move cannot usually be influenced. An attempt is therefore made to keep the speed at the end position as low as possible. Depending on the cylinder diameter, the exhaust air is blocked off in the last few centimetres of the stroke and is only released via a flow control point (with adjustable flow control). This causes a significantly higher back pressure to be built up for a short time, counteracting the movement The speed of the cylinder is greatly reduced within a short space of time and, if the end position cushioning is set correctly, the residual kinetic energy remains below the maximum permissible limit. Cylinders with pneumatic end position cushioning are indicated by the letters PPV in their type designation.
