Software in product development
In our business units, our employees develop object-oriented embedded software. In addition to the areas of pneumatics or robotics, our developers work in the business units Electric Automation, LifeTech or Process Automation, depending on the product. The focus here is on the design and implementation of software throughout the entire product life cycle. The main topics are the design and further development of architectures with UML as well as development with C/C++. The product portfolio is diverse, ranging from microcontroller-based drive controllers to powerful PLC controllers.
Holistic approach to Digital Business
We follow a holistic approach to digitalisation. Our experts develop digital solutions for all phases of the value chain - from qualification for digital transformation and engineering to commissioning and maintenance. In addition, our colleagues also use artificial intelligence (AI) in products and applications. For example, huge amounts of data do not have to be transferred to the cloud, but can be interpreted directly on the machine in real time thanks to our AI "on edge" solution. With a passion for the subject, our AI experts are also developing the first Festo products with AI. Our software solution is used worldwide and optimizes manufacturing processes with the help of machine learning, for example through predictive maintenance, continuous quality monitoring and the reduction of energy consumption. There are virtually no limits to the use of digital solutions and AI, and our employees are working on new innovations every day using the state-of-the-art technologies.
IT
Many innovations have their origin in IT, and at the same time the IT pervasiveness of processes is increasing enormously. It is precisely this self-image and the focus on Festo's value proposition that make our Global IT so special. Our highest maxim is innovative and efficient IT solutions based on a modern infrastructure.
As an industry-wide pioneer in cloud readiness and an SAP customer of the first hour, we combine reliable enterprise IT with modern IT infrastructures and technologies. We use AWS, Azure, Kubernetes and serverless computing as well as S4/Hana, SAP Hybris and SAP Firoi. In addition, our IT employees drive forward many other topics such as AI, intelligent automation, agile transformation, rethought digital workplaces or IT security with clever minds and passion. The focus here is always on the business, the effectiveness of our systems in the processes and simplicity of use.
Research and development are of central importance at Festo. That's why we also invest around 8% of our turnover in it every year.
In the area of research, we lay the foundations for our innovative products and work on new technologies. Research fields here are, for example: Digital Engineering, Artificial Intelligence as well as Robotics and Control Engineering. Bionics also provides us with new approaches. We learn from nature and transfer its modes of operation to technical applications.
Our development departments in the individual business units are developing tomorrow's automation technology close to the product. In addition to pneumatic development, our developers work in the areas of Electric Automation, LifeTech, Process Automation or Robotics, depending on the product focus. In addition to development, our products are also tested thoroughly.
Production
In our production network, expertise meets an innovative working environment. The complexity of our products requires a high standard in production, which is why we are working on the factory of the future. This involves merging the product development and production processes and, of course, "Industry 4.0". In order to meet the demands of our customers with our production also in the future, we create a working environment with the highest demands on production standards, safety, productivity increase as well as possibilities for further development. In our production, the customer's idea becomes reality.
Logistics
Products for all Festo production plants and numerous external suppliers are handled at the locations of our global logistics network. In this way, we ensure the worldwide supply of our customers.
Our daily business is the handling of the entire Festo product range and customer-specific solutions. We focus on the continuous optimization of our value chains on the basis of lean methods.
At the heart of our processes are highly automated warehouses and picking systems (miniload, high-bay warehouse, sorter, automatic packaging system) with up to 270,000 container and 10,000 pallet storage locations at one location. At individual locations, up to 50,000 items are traded daily and up to 20,000 parcels are shipped to our end customers and to the Festo logistics network. With expertise, we are responsible for other topics such as the planning of global value flows, the continuous further development of logistics processes and their digitalisation, and the management of cross-border flows of goods in customs law.

Our Quality Management department is responsible for ensuring quality. This is characterized both by high-quality products and processes and by the people behind them. Our goal: customer satisfaction with zero failures through intuitive, dynamic and flexible processes. We want to provide our customers with suitable solutions for complex problems and tasks. To achieve this, the quality of the processes and the products as well as the attitude of the employees must interact optimally. Holistic corporate quality is our ambition. Festo Didactic is the world's leading solution provider for technical education and training with a strong industrial DNA. With a state-of-the-art didactic approach, our Didactic employees ensure the employability and productivity of our customers. Learning environments are developed for education and industry. Industrial people development is a key success factor for companies. That is why our Didactic experts help with the retraining and further qualification of employees. The product and service portfolio offers customers holistic training solutions for key technology fields such as factory automation, process automation, pneumatics and hydraulics, electrical engineering and electronics, energy technology, environmental technology and renewable energies, communications and radar technology, building systems technology or heating, air conditioning and ventilation technology. In the team-oriented and practical training on physical learning systems with industrial components, learners acquire technical knowledge and soft skills. They can also learn independent of location and time through digital online learning opportunities.
In the department of Controlling, Accounting and Finance, our employees ensure that everything runs smoothly from a commercial point of view. Depending on the focus, the tasks can be very different.
In Controlling, we support employees with operational responsibility in decision-making. Budgets and resources are planned together with the department and compliance with them is monitored. For example, target and actual data are compared, profitability calculations are carried out and results are analyzed. Recommendations are also made in the individual areas as to how economic targets can be better achieved. In addition, our employees calculate contribution margins, transfer prices, define key figures or prepare forecasts and contribute to profit and loss statements.
Our Accounting department deals with receivables, liabilities, fixed assets and current costs. In this way, we maintain an overview of the entire financial accounting.
In Finance, our employees support the various business units with their expert knowledge of financial planning and management. For example, they support investment decisions, carry out make-or-buy analyses and develop financial portfolios. This knowledge is thus incorporated into both the operational and strategic planning processes.
Our purchasing department is responsible for the holistic category management of reliable suppliers who deliver at the highest quality, always on time and at the best price. At the interface of business administration and technology - in the Global Purchasing Network - you will be responsible for supplying our company with production materials, merchandise, capital goods and services. Procurement market, price and competition analyses are carried out in order to be able to supply efficiently and sustainably. Sustainable supplier development supports the achievement of long-term goals. Our network consists of the Global Purchasing Headquarters in Germany and the international Festo Purchasing Units in the national companies and regions - plenty of room for an interface function in purchasing at Festo.
Our marketing team ensures that the Festo brand, the associated portfolio and our services are optimally presented in all media channels. Our marketing employees develop campaigns to market our innovative products and solutions visibly and attractively offline, at trade fairs and in print, as well as online via social media. But there is much more to do beyond that. For example, the definition, analysis, development and management of sales channels, the competitive alignment of our product portfolio, pricing, the management of channels to the customer or the steering of sales processes.
The heart of our external communication is Festo's website, which presents itself in a functional and visually state-of-the-art design. Here, our customers find a comprehensive range of services that supports them through all phases of the most diverse customer journeys. From editorial information and engineering tools to store and after-sales functionalities. We use extensive analytics and regular customer surveys to ensure that content and functions are constantly focused on the customer. In this way, we ensure that we are always close to our customers, even digitally.
Corporate Communication is responsible for authentic internal and external corporate communications and image-building brand communication. The focus is on innovation, technology, education, knowledge and sustainability. In external communications, we focus on press releases and conferences, media reports (TV, radio, print), social media, and much more. Internally, we use online and print formats to provide informative and emotionally connecting information to our employees worldwide.
In Human Resources, we focus on our employees: from recruiting and onboarding to individual support and personal development. With passion and expertise, we are responsible for topics such as talent management and leadership development, design change processes, manage and support strategic projects, develop innovative learning opportunities and implement creative work concepts - on the way to the workplace of the future.
