Release 12/2024

What's new

  • Default encoder selection changed: The default value "Festo Recommendation" is now mapped with absolute single-turn encoders for the newly introduced stepper motor families EMMT-ST and EMMB-ST. The countries DE, AT and CH are an exception: Here, both stepper and servo motors will be displayed with absolute multi-turn encoders by default.
  • Notification for manually added accessories: Accessories, which are manually added to the bill of materials of one selected solution, are not subject to any sizing calculation. It is important to check the applicability of such components with the specified application parameters before placing an order. This information is now added as notification into the tool UI and into the PDF sizing report.
  • "Contact" form is now linked so that users can reach out to the Festo Technical Support in order to clarify questions related to a given solution. The contact form is automatically filled with a link to the specific Electric Motion Sizing project.

  • Fixed: Automatic motor brake selection has not worked properly in certain application cases with vertical mounting position.

Release 10/2024

What's new

  • "Save solution" functionality: Users can save their individual solutions from Electric Motion Sizing in the newly introduced MyFesto cloud platform in order to create and collaborate on their project BoM. This functionality requires an "Express Account" on www.festo.com, which is being created within just a minute.
  • "Target position" input for rotative applications ("General linear load case") is changed from relative [no. of rotations] to absolute [°]
  • Toggle button +/- added to the parameter input "External torque"
  • "Actuator support spacing" added as input parameter, exclusively affecting solutions with the linear actuator ELGD. This parameter can be used for specifying applications in which a long axis stroke may cause deflections of the axis.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: Electric Motion Sizing displayed invalid solutions from the cache in certain cases. Users can easily check, if their project/solution was affected, by reopening the solution from the link in the downloaded PDF sizing report. If the solution is displayed again upon reopening, then it is not affected.
  • Fixed: Adobe Reader was not able to properly save the URL of an EMS solution within the PDF sizing report in certain cases. Reopening such solutions from Adobe Reader therefore caused problems in these cases. The URLs are now being compressed for Adobe Reader in order to avoid this behavior.
  • Fixed: The PDF sizing report did not update with minor modifications to a selected solution, e.g. selecting a PLC type or adding project data.
  • Fixed: Configurable options of EGSK (H-class, P-class, short slide) are removed from the tool's product scope.

Release 03/2024

What's new

  • New CMMT-AS servo drives in the power classes 9kW and 12kW are added to the tool.

Release 02/2024

What's new

  • New template for Festo drive with user-defined transmission
  • Possibility to define center of force (X, Y, Z) is added to the tool
  • Workloads >90% are no longer highlighted in yellow colour. Why? The tool includes an algorithm that optimizes every solution "as fast as possible" by default. In most cases this leads to at least one component of a solution being utilized to its limit (99%). This does not mean that this solution is at its absolute limit for the given application parameters - in most cases it can easily do the application with lower workload just by not running as fast as possible.
  • New axis ELGD added as "long slide" versions

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: Description of "Nominal torque" and "RMS torque" was mixed up in the "motor characteristics" section.

Release 01/2024

What's new

  • New ball screw and toothed belt axes ELGD-TB and ELGD-BS added to the tool. The toothed belt type ELGD-TB is available with sizes 60, 80 and 100-WD, the ball screw type ELGD-BS with sizes 80 and 100-WD. More sizes and options will follow in the upcoming months.
  • The term "jerk" is added to the input parameter "acceleration behavior" in order to highlight that this input has an indirect or - by using the optional input "user-specific jerk" - direct effect on the jerk value in the motion profile.
  • The info button text for the input parameter "Mass moment of inertia ratio" now includes the information about how the selected values are applied to servo and stepper motors respectively.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: Automatic motor cable selection for combinations CMMT-AS servo drive with EMMT-AS servo motor has been updated according to the selection logic as described in the EMMT-AS catalogue.
  • Fixed: Solutions with extra low voltage drive CMMT-ST-MP have not been displayed when selecting Modbus TCP as fieldbus.

Release 11/2023

What's new

  • Additional input option "user-defined jerk" [m/s³; rpm/s²] is now added to the filter "Acceleration behavior". The new input allows users to define the jerk, which is then applied to acceleration and deceleration of all steps of the motion cycle, themselves.
  • New servo motors EMMT-AS-100 with length "very long" ("-H-") added to Electric Motion Sizing.
  • User can now easily navigate one page back using the "back" button on the top left.
  • Image added to the load case "Conveyor" in order to highlight the fact that the input parameter "Total inertia of all rollers" requires to consider both drive and idler rollers.
  • Calculated value "required usable force [N]" added to the displayed results parameters.
  • Info button added to give more explanation about the "Festo recommended" encoder type. The default settings (="Festo recommendation") go for an absoulute multi-turn encoder for all servo motor product families (EMMT-AS, EMMB-AS, EMME-AS) and for an incremental encoder for the stepper motor family EMMS-ST. Info button added in order to give additional explanation to the input field "Mass moment of inertia" within the "Index table" load case template.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: For the load case "Index Table" the calculation results have been partly displayed wrongly as the transmission ratio of the user-defined non-Festo transmission mechanism was not considered. This bug has not had an effect on the actual sizing calculations, in which the transmission ratio has been considered correctly. I.e. all displayed results have been valid based on sizing calculations.
  • Fixed: It is now possible to use more characters for adding project data to the sizing report PDF.

Release 10/2023 (hotfix)

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: Transmission ratio of Non-Festo transmission mechanism has not been considered for the displayed calculation results speed/acceleration/jerk/emergency stop. This bug affected exclusively the Index Table load case. The actual sizing calculations have considered the transmission ratio, i.e. all displayed/selectable results have been calculated correctly and have therefore been valid.

Release 08/2023

What's new

  • Add project data to documentation: Users are now able to add project specific information to the sizing report PDF for documentation purposes. The information can be added in a popup window when starting the sizing report download. This is an optional input, i.e. the download can also be startet without adding project data. The inputs from users are not being saved.
  • Additional explanation added to the filters "Guide type" and "Motor brake" about what "Festo recommendation" means.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: EGC axes with heavy duty guide (EGC-HD) have not been included into the tool as versions with protected slide
  • Fixed: Workloads of rotary modules ERMO & ERMB have been calculated not considering the internal transmission of the actuators (only a bug in the displayed value, no bug in the actual sizing calculation, i.e. displayed solutions are still valid)

Release 07/2023

What's new

  • Automatic selection of braking resistors: For solutions with servo motors the tool has indicated the demand for an external braking resistor, if needed, for quite a while. Now it automatically selects a suitable braking resistor from our catalogue based on nominal power and resistance value as selection criteria. If multiple braking resistors are suitable, then the one with the smallest nominal power (i.e. the one with the lowest list price) will be selected. If no suitable resistor can be found in our portfolio, then only the notification text will be displayed to users.
  • Electrical slide EGSK added to actuator selection. Users can now select EGSK for applications that require both high repetition accuracy and high rigidity.
  • Default encoder selection for servo motors changed to "absolute multi-turn": The definition of "Festo recommendation" is now changed, so that for solutions with servo motors the tool will propose the absolute multi-turn encoder versions instead of single-turn.
  • The calculated jerk value [m/s³] is now printed into the motion profile table in the sizing report PDF.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: The requested input value "roll inertia" (template: Conveyor Belt) is renamed to "total inertia of all rolls".
  • Fixed: Input value "Mass moment of inertia" was converted wrongly in the sizing report PDF for the "Index Table" template.

This way, users will have easy access to all available expert knowledge that helps connecting the selected Festo servo drive to their preferred PLC. The corresponding links to all available expert knowledge will also be saved in the sizing report PDF.
  • Users are now able to define their preferred actuator stroke independent from the max. stroke of the application.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: Calculation of max. torque Mx on actuator guide has not been calculated correctly in random/rare cases with a defined radial mounting orientation of 90° (slider sideways).
  • Fixed: Result parameters for load cases with Non-Festo kinematics (Rack & Pinion, Conveyor Belt, Ball Screw Actuator) are now displayed in linear units

What's new

  • Sign logic for external forces has changed: Due to inconsistency with other tools, it is necessary to change the logic how external forces can be defined in Electric Motion Sizing.

    • old logic: A positive force acts accelerating in the direction of movement, a negative force acts decelerating in the direction of movement.
    • new logic: The coordinate system is our reference! A positive force acts into positive X-direction, a negative force acts against positive X-direction. This means that a continuously acting force against positive X-direction will act decelerating when extracting (i.e. moving in positive X-direction) and accelerating when retracting.
  • Complete UI redesign: The appearance of Electric Motion Sizing was subject to a complete makeover. It now comes with several improvements based on user feedback that was collected during the past months.

Important note: As several substantial changes have been made, the tool can not handle URLs of the "old" design any more.

  • Filters added to application templates: Users can now specify the two filters "Fieldbus/Control" and "Actuator Type" already before doing the first calculation. These filters are implemented into the different application templates.

  • Advanced filtering mode: When using the motion step table for defining the motion cycle in detail, users can now access the entire range of filters before running the first calculation. This saves time for users who have very specific requirements towards the solution.

  • Numbering of results: For a better overview, the listed results are now coming with numbers that users can refer to when collaborating on a sizing project.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: Wrong part numbers were shown in the PDF fact sheet for ESBF cylinders with external guides EAGF.
  • Fixed: Actuator masses now completely bypassed for horizontal and vertical mounting positions when the guide load should not be considered (external guidance required)
  • Fixed: Acceleration filters outgoing from mounting kit, motor and actuator for rotary applications including rotary modules (ERMO, ERMB) consider all technical parameters now

Release 11/2021 (Part II)

What's new

  • Download commissioning file: Users can now download the commissioning file for easy import in Festo Automation Suite

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: Missing EMGC gears are now shown together with integrated motors EMCA.

Release 11/2021 (Part I)

What's new

  • Results sorting: Users can now sort the shown results by price (default), by cycle time and by mass moment of inertia ratio.
  • New ball screw linear actuator ELGT included in Electric Motion Sizing. Please note that certain functionality is still reduced as long as the online catalogue is not yet updated with ELGT: No product image, no accessories selectable. However, it is possible to order ELGT via the online shop.
  • Integrated drive EMCA included. EMCA is handled as motor family in the tool and is deselected by default.
  • Integrated electric cylinder EPCO included. EPCO is deselected by default.
  • Default ambient temperature is changed from 25°C to 20°C (in order to be conform with other Festo engineering tools)

Bug fixes

  • Fixed: Comma-inputs were ignored when using the slider direct input field (for certain language versions).
  • Fixed: Motion profile graph used to not "use" the entire x-axis.
  • Fixed: Breadcrumb menu navigation for standalone version (for countries where the new Festo website is not yet rolled out) used to disappear in certain cases.
  • Fixed: Entered values in edit fields could not be deleted, only changed.
  • Fixed: The entire tool header for standalone version (for countries where the new Festo website is not yet rolled out) used to link to the starting page, losing all entered and changed parameters. Now only the Festo logo in the header links to the starting page.

Release 09/2021

What's new

  • Release Notes: From now on releases of Electric Motion Sizing will be documented in this Release Notes page. This page can be accessed internally as well as externally. Important: Release Notes are only available in English language:
    https://www.festo.com/eac/en-us_us/ReleaseNotes/electric-motion-sizing/
  • Regionalization of default values: Default values can now be defined on country-level. Regional variations of default values have been implemented for servo motor family (EMMB-AS), power supply (120V in US, CA, MX) and fieldbus selection.
  • Gantry axis ELGR added:
  • Motor family EMME-AS added:
  • "Guide type" filter added: Users can now manually select the preferred guide technology for linear actuators.
  • Filter for mass moment of inertia ratio added: The filter "regulation loop" offers the 3 options "dynamic", "standard" and "soft". These 3 options stand for three different upper limits of mass moment of inertia ratio.
  • Filter dependencies are now implemented: For certain filters, user selections have an impact on possible values of other filters. These dependencies are now implemented for:
    • Motor Technology - Motor Family
    • Fieldbus/Control - Servo Drive Family
    • Actuator Type - Actuator Technology - Guide Type - Actuator Family
  • Improved info button for "center of gravity of mass": The info button image now shows the coordinate system for 3 different mounting orientations.
  • Travel times of individual steps in the motion profile are now listed in the calculation results.
  • Supply voltage is now shown as value in the calculation results. The nominal voltage of the selected component is not displayed anymore in order to avoid confusion.

Bug fixes

  • Logic for adding external guide unit EAGF to electric cylinders ESBF has been modified. EAGF will be automatically added to electric cylinders ESBF according to the following logic:
    • for horizontal orientation if the moving mass is > 0kg
    • for vertical orientation if the moving mass is > 0kg and the center of gravity of mass is not 0/0/0
    • in all cases, EAGF will only be added if the user selects "Consider effect of load on the actuator guide"
  • Motor shaft filter fixed. Users can now select either smooth output shaft or feather key shaft (to DIN 6885) for rotary applications.
  • PDF report download works reliably again.

Release 08/2021

What's new

  • Improved filtering algorithm: "Quality" (competitiveness, comparability with PositioningDrives) of displayed results. Less cases of highly overdimensioned results or 0 results.
  • Encoder selection filter changed to single-select: Users can now select 1 encoder type. Global default value is "FESTO Recommendation", which stands for single-turn encoder (servo motors) and incremental encoder (stepper motors).
  • Local language versions: Electric Motion Sizing is now fully translated for China, Hongkong and Taiwan

Bug fixes

  • "Non-standard" configurable variants are filtered out: The tool used to display non-standard variants, like EGC-TB with proximity sensor ("-Z"), for no particular reason. These are now being filtered out.
  • Sizing of cantilever axes ELCC now works properly. Still, users need to change the "actuator type" filter selection from "Gantry axis" (default) to " Cantilever axis".
  • Negative input values for Center of Gravity of Mass (X/Y/Z) is now possible.

Release 06/2021

What's new

  • Improved sharing functionality: URL can be copied to clipboard by clicking "Share" icon on the top right
  • Local language versions: Electric Motion Sizing is now (partly) translated to local languages
    • translation is almost complete for some countries
    • for other countries, only parts of the texts are translated into local language, others are still in EN
    • translation process will continue, upcoming releases will have more and more local language content

Bug fixes

  • ERMO removed from selection: since ERMO is currently not yet implemented into Electric Motion Sizing, the respective value has been removed from the " actuator family" filter
  • All input parameters are now written into URL: Information for center of gravity of mass as well as for max/exact travel time got lost when copying and pasting URL to a new browser window.
  • Accessories available also for non-FoX countries: Accessories can now be selected and added to the bill of materials, also for countries where FoX is not yet rolled out.
